"LEISURE FACILITIES NOT FOR SALE" SAYS CONSERVATIVE COUNCILLOR

Following last Saturday’s demonstration outside the Dorking Halls, Conservative Councillor, David Sharland, the Portfolio Holder for Health, Safety and Wellbeing said:-

"As we have repeatedly pointed out, our leisure facilities are not for sale and it has never been said that they would be sold. That is the message on the council website, and the message that we have been putting out to residents, users and staff. It is entirely irresponsible for the Liberal Democrats to suggest otherwise, and simply causes unnecessary distress, particularly for our hard working staff and worry for the users.

The council is actually looking at various options for managing these facilities. We want to provide an excellent service whilst getting value for money. Getting value for money does not necessarily mean cutting costs. The performance of our leisure services has never been in doubt but it is possible that external providers, through their specialist focus and expertise will be able to offer additional benefits.

We have invited a number of organisations to put forward their proposals and we are still in the process of weighing these up, alongside the option of retaining the management in house.

More information will be available to the public on the 23rd Marcy 2008, when the Council Agenda papers containing the results of our investigations to date are published. We will then be holding a Council meeting on the 3rd June 2008 to discuss the best way forward. At present however, I would stress that we are just testing the market. I reiterate that these facilities are not for sale."

At a meeting of Mole Valley District Council on the 22nd April 2008, councillors discussed the plans for the district’s leisure facilities. However the Liberal Democrats say that the facilities are to be sold. Their councillors should be better informed and listen to the facts."

The Conservative Administration can categorically say that THE DORKING HALLS AND THE LEATHERHEAD LEISURE CENTRE ARE NOT FOR SALE.
