More Council "filibustering" delays debate on Post Offices as Budget is voted through
Mole Valley councillors met on the 19th February 2008 to decide on the budget and council tax for 2008 2009. Council tax is due to rise by 2.95%.
Conservative Councillor Chris Hunt, the Deputy Leader of the council said:-
"We are facing challenging times in local government. Three years ago the government made the decision to divert more resources to the north and the inner cities. This is a budget that builds upon an already impressive record. It protects and enhances our services, and combines compassion with leadership."
However there were eight amendments to the budget from the Liberal Democrats, and one from the Independents, all of which were defeated.
Conservative Leader of the Council, Tim Hall said:-
"This is a now familiar Liberal Democrat tactic a series of wrecking motions that waste time. As a result of this filibustering, we lost crucial time that could have been spent discussing the imminent closure of Mole Valleys post offices, and co-ordinating our efforts to oppose these closures."
"At one point during the Budget debate we were told by one Liberal Democrat councillor I dont give a hang where the money comes from. That rather sums up the attitude of the opposition towards Mole Valleys budget."
