ASHTEAD COUNCILLOR SAYS "TESCO MUST PROVIDE PARKING"

Ashtead residents expressed concerns about their car park at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall. Local residents are concerned that Mole Valley District Council will sell off the car park to Tesco, who wish to build a supermarket nearby. However as landowner , MVDC will only do what is in the best interests of the community as a whole.

It is understood that Tesco will be submitting a planning application to the council in July and their consultation will start this week.

In April 2008, Tesco announced plans to build a superstore in Ashtead on a site that they had already purchased, having beaten off a number of rivals including Waitrose. Mole Valley Councillors have been meeting with representatives of Tesco in order to ascertain the extent of their plans.

Now residents fear that Tesco wants the car park for its shoppers.

Conservative Councillor, Chris Hunt (Ashtead Village) said:-

"At this stage we understand that a planning application will be made but no terms have been agreed in respect of the car park. We have insisted that Tesco provide four hour car parking for the benefit of Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall users and residents. We understand Tesco to be including this in their proposals. At present, there are no plans to sell the car park to Tesco."
