CONCERNS ABOUT CLOSURE OF SURGERIES

Concerns have been expressed by people on Box Hill about the continuation of their branch surgery there, due to proposals by Government to change the existing system of GP surgeries.

Apparently there is no immediate threat to the surgery in Box Hill village and absolutely no intention to close it. However there are issues for the future.

Conservative Councillor David Sharland, Portfolio Holder for Health and Well-Being said:-

"The financial viability of the surgery on Box Hill depends on the pharmacy. A Government White Paper was published on 3 April 2008 on pharmacies, which apparently make it easier for people to set up pharmacies without regard to the effect on existing pharmacies. Recently there was a proposal to set up a new pharmacy in Holmwood which would have threatened the continuation of the doctor's surgery there. This was stopped under the existing legislation. Dispensing is a profitable activity which in rural areas is used to prop up the finances of small surgeries. It is possible that if the legislation following on from the White Paper does not take account of the viability of isolated rural surgeries, many rural surgeries will close.

Another idea for the future is Polyclinics, which may be so large that a town the size of Dorking would have just one polyclinic and no other doctors' surgeries. The Government envisages that the polyclinics would be run by private companies. However it is not clear how this would affect access for people in isolated rural villages."
