Councillor Ben Tatham
Mickleham, Westhumble and Pixham
Ben was born and brought up in Surrey and has lived in Westhumble since 1966. He is a civil engineer who specialises in ports, docks, canals and flood defences. Ben has an MA in engineering from Cambridge University and is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He has been responsible for feasibility studies, designs and the supervision of construction of major projects in over thirty countries all over the world. Ben was a Technical Director with an international firm of consulting engineers in Redhill before retiring.
Ben was elected a Conservative Councillor for Dorking Urban District Council in 1970 and he has served on Mole Valley District Council since its formation in 1973. He was Chairman of the Council in 1980-1981 and has been chairman of many of the main committees.
Ben is Chairman of the Governors of St Michael's First School, Mickleham and was for many years a Governor of Box Hill School. He was project coordinator for the £250,000 refurbishment of Mickleham Village Hall in 2004 – 2006 and is now responsible for the maintenance of the hall.
He has a long standing interest in the National Trust and has in the past been the Chairman of the Box Hill Management Committee and the Vice-Chairman of the National Trust Regional Committee. He is President of the Friends of Box Hill and a member of several local organisations, including the Dorking Decorative and Fine Arts Society, the Friends of Juniper Hall and the Mickleham and Westhumble Horticultural Society.
Ben is married to Sue and they have a son and a daughter and one grandson. Sue is editor of the Mickleham Parish Magazine, Chairman of the Trustees of Mickleham Village Hall and membership secretary of the Dorking Decorative and Fine Arts Society as well as being a member of the Mickleham Choral Society.
Ben lives in the ward and he is accessible by telephone, email and in person. He is in constant contact with Mickleham Parish Council and the Westhumble Residents Association.
Ben is the Portfolio Holder for Finance and Assets.
