Clare is chair of the Governing Body of Therfield School in Leatherhead and a member of the Governing Body of Eastwick Infant School in Bookham. She is actively involved in several community-focussed organisations in Bookham.

Councillor David Walker

Bookham North

David Walker was elected Conservative Councillor for Bookham North in 2003 and was reelected with massively-enlarged majority in May 2007.

Born in 1944, David grew up in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. After taking a university degree by external study whilst supporting himself as a hospital porter, David started his formal career as a management trainee in the gas industry which was then undergoing a swift transformation to a modern marketing-led organisation using advanced technology demanded by the new natural gas supply.

David subsequently made a promotional move to Esso. He undertook a wide range of assignments including sales representative, office services manager, work analysis/system development, personnel administration and latterly he was a specialist accounts payable supervisor. His work took him to many locations across southern Britain, culminating in a move to Esso’s Leatherhead Office where he served until opting for early retirement in 2002 to take up public voluntary service.

As the first Finance Director of the Leatherhead BFREE Youth Café, David helped raise over £150,000 starting capital. Having learnt early in life that big decisions depend on effective ground-level action, David places as much attention to achieving service delivery as to devising policy; so he serves on the Customer Services Development panel, the Performance & Audit Committee, and as a reserve on the Policy Committee. As Vice Chair of Licensing, David contributes to our wellbeing under the new liquor legislation. Using his financial insight on the Budget Panel, he helped find over £500,000 Council Tax economies for 2007 and will repeat this service for 2008.

Throughout, David has been a constant member of the Methodist Church and of the Conservative Party, and has held a number of voluntary senior offices in each. He is also a member of the National Trust, Probus, Bookham Community Association and the Bookhams Residents’ Association.

David has been married to Freda since 1969, and they have a grown up daughter and son.

David is the Portfolio Holder for Housing and Community Support.
