Councillor Vivienne Michael
Okewood
Vivienne has lived in Mole Valley for over 20 years, moving from Dorking to Charlwood 18 years ago. She was elected as the Conservative Councillor for the Okewood Ward in May 2003.
Her son, David, attended Pixham Lane Primary, Reigate, St Mary's Preparatory and Reigate Grammar Schools.
After graduating in Botany, Zoology and History and Philosophy of Science, Vivienne trained as a microbiologist, undertaking research at the Central Public Health Laboratories in Colindale.
An interest in improving public understanding of science led to a career in information, media relations and journalism during which she gained experience in both the corporate and public sectors and wrote on health and family matters for many national newspapers and magazines including The Sunday Times and Good Housekeeping.
Vivienne has over 20 years' experience of policy-making, management, communications and fundraising in the voluntary sector and has for some years been the Chief Executive of a national medical research charity, Deafness Research UK. Prior to that, she was Publications Director for the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) in Dorking.
She currently serves on the Executive Council of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) and is a Trustee of the United Kingdom Council on Deafness (UKOD).
Vivienne is a member of the Naval Club and serves on the Council of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves Officers' Association. She also sits on the committee which is raising funds to preserve the War Memorial to those who lost their lives serving in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
Vivienne is President, Honorary Secretary and a member of several local community committees and takes an active interest in the environment and rural affairs. A botanist by training, Vivienne has always had an interest in the environment and rural affairs. She has been active in the campaigns against the Capel Incinerator, a second runway at Gatwick and the Government’s hunting ban. She is currently on the Steering Group of the Gatwick Greenspace Partnership.
Although holding down a demanding job, Vivienne’s considerable energy and drive have enabled her play an active role in the local community and make a substantial contribution as your Okewood District Councillor. Vivienne is the Chairman of the Conservative Group.
