"NOT FOR SALE" SAYS CONSERVATIVE COUNCILLOR

Conservative Councillor, David Sharland, the Portfolio Holder for Health, Safety and Well Being spoke out today, after Unison, the public sector workers union announced that its members are to campaign against any possible "externalisation" of Mole Valley’s leisure services.

Rumours of a sale surfaced after a Liberal Democrat election leaflet suggested that the facilities are to be put on the market.

Councillor Sharland said:-

"Our leisure facilities are not for sale. That is the message on the council website, and the message that we have been putting out to residents, users and staff. It is entirely irresponsible for the Liberal Democrats to suggest otherwise, and simply causes unnecessary distress, particularly for our hard working staff.

The council is actually looking at various options for managing these facilities. We want to provide an excellent service whilst getting value for money. The performance of our leisure services has never been in doubt but it is possible that external providers, through their specialist focus and expertise will offer additional benefits.

We have invited a number of organizations to put forward their proposals and we are still in the process of weighing these up, alongside the option of retaining the management in house. We are just testing the market."
